The NYSDMV maintains statistical data about motor vehicle accidents, vehicle registrations and drivers.
The accident data are compiled from the written accident reports of motorists and police agencies. The accident data are released after a complete calendar year is compiled. The data for the years 1995 - 2008 are currently available.
Some of the other information, for example, the numbers for population and road miles, are collected from other government agencies.
Injury Severity Key for Table 2(P) and Table 10(P)
"K" Fatal injuries include deaths which occur within thirty days following injury in a motor vehicle accident.
"A" Severe injuries include skull fractures, internal injuries, broken or distorted limbs, unconsciousness, severe lacerations, and unable to leave the scene without assistance.
"B" Moderate injuries include visible injuries such as a "lump" on the head, abrasions, and minor lacerations.
"C" Slight injuries include hysteria, nausea, momentary unconsciousness, and complaint of pain without visible signs of injury.
NOTE: It is important to note that the data for 2007 are not strictly comparable to the data for previous years. Changes in data collection and reporting that began during 2006 with respect to property damage crashes have increased the total number of crashes; the changes resulted in more property damage crashes being captured in the statewide Accident Information System (AIS) maintained by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles.
