Frequently Asked Questions About the Road Test Scheduling System

How do I schedule a road test?

You can schedule a road test in two ways, by telephone or on-line.  Both systems use the same data base of appointment times. You can access the On-line Road Test Scheduling System here, or you can access the Telephone Road Test Scheduling System by calling 1-518-402-2100.

In order to schedule your road test, you must have:

Carefully follow the instruction you read or hear in the on-line or telephone scheduling system to schedule a road test at the earliest available date, time and at the location you choose.

How do I find road test locations?

Road test locations and driving directions can be found at the web site and also in the road test scheduling system.

How does the on-line road test scheduling system work?

You see an overview of the on-line road test scheduling system.

I can't log on to the Road Test Scheduling System. Is the system down?

The system could be down, but generally when the system is down you will get an error page that tells you the "server is not available."  If you enter incorrect or incomplete information, you cannot log in and you will receive a specific message about the error you made.

If you continue to have a problem on the Internet system, then you should try the automated telephone system at 1-518-402-2100.

Can I request a specific date, time and place for my road test?

The system will ask you for the zip code of the area where you wish to take your road test, and will then offer you several sites to choose from. The system then allows you to choose a morning or afternoon appointment or no preference. The on-line system will also allow you to specify a specific day of the week if you wish. The system will then respond with 2 or 3 choices for the earliest appointments available, based on the limits you set.

How long will it take me to get a road test appointment?

Generally your test will be approximately 3 to 5 weeks from the date you made the appointment. However, during certain peak times, such as the summer months and during school recesses, the road test waiting time may be as much as 10 weeks.

How can I find out the earliest available appointment date at a specific site?

The Road Test Scheduling System automatically offers you the earliest appointment available according to the limits you set when using it. For example, if you request an afternoon appointment on Tuesday using the on-line system, you will be offered the first available Tuesday afternoon appointment. If you pick no preference for morning, afternoon or weekday, you will be offered the first available appointment at the site you selected.

Can I be put on a waiting list for an appointment slot that has been cancelled by someone else?

No. Cancelled appointment slots are not automatically available for rescheduling, and there are no waiting lists for earlier appointments.

Why do I have to cancel the appointment I have before I can look for another appointment at a different location?

In order to be able to offer the largest selection of appointments to all of our customers, the system is programmed to prevent customers from holding more than one active appointment at a time. Because so many customers are using the system at one time, appointments are filled very rapidly. By the time you are able to cancel your old appointment and reschedule a new one, the appointment you wanted might very well be booked by another customer, leaving you with no appointment at all. Therefore, it is generally in your best interest to keep your original appointment unless it is absolutely necessary to cancel and try to schedule an earlier appointment.

Do you schedule Saturday appointments anywhere?

DMV does not generally schedule Saturday appointments except on very rare occasions when demand requires it. If DMV does add Saturday slots to the system, they will be offered just as any other day or time is currently offered.

How can I confirm my appointment?

You can confirm your appointment by accessing either the on-line or telephone road test scheduling system and entering your 9-digit client ID number. The system will instruct you on how to confirm the appointment you already scheduled.

What should I do if weather or a local emergency might be cause for the cancellation of my driving test?

If an emergency situation should arise you should call our automated Road Test Scheduling System at 1-518-402-2100 where emergency instructions will be posted. If your appointment is cancelled by the Department of Motor Vehicles, you will be directed as to how you should proceed with regard to rescheduling your appointment.

Can I schedule my road test before I take the 5-hour pre-licensing course?

No. You must enter your pre-licensing course completion certificate number when scheduling your appointment. You also must present the certificate to the examiner at the road test post.

My certificate is expiring before I can get a road test appointment. What can I do?

You can still schedule your appointment as long as you do it before the certificate expires. The license examiner will let you take your road test as long as the documentation shows that you scheduled your test before your certificate expired. However, you will not be allowed to schedule another test if you fail. You will need to obtain another 5-hour pre-licensing course completion certificate before you schedule another test.

If my certificate expires, can I renew it?

No. You must take another 5-hour pre-licensing course in order to obtain another certificate.

What can I do if I lose my 5-hour course completion certificate?

You should contact the organization where you took the course, and obtain a duplicate from them.

I have a foreign license. Must I take the 5-hour pre-licensing course?

Yes, you must take a 5-hour pre-licensing course.

On the day of your road test, you should be at the road test post 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time.

NOTE:  ALL NYS road test applicants are required to provide one of the following photo documents when they take their road test:  NYS photo driver permit, NYS photo license or an NYS photo non-driver ID.

IMPORTANT

For commercial driver license (CDL) road tests conducted on or after September 1, 2006:

  • On and after September 1, 2006, the NYSDMV cannot issue a 10-day temporary CDL when you pass a CDL skills (road) test.
  • Federal regulations require the NYSDMV to check both the National Driver Register and the Commercial Driver License Information System before the NYSDMV can issue a CDL.
  • If you pass a CDL skills test on or after September 1, 2006, you must wait at least seven days after the skills test, then go to a DMV office to amend your driver license to a CDL.  Until your CDL is issued, you continue to hold only a CDL permit, and must comply with all restrictions and limitations of the permit.
If you got your learner permit after September 1, 2003:

If you have a Class DJ or MJ learner permit, you must bring form MV-262 (Certification of 20 Hours of Driving Experience) unless you are 17 years of age and have an MV-285 (Student Certificate of Completion).

For motorcycle license applicants:

NYS law defines a motorcycle as a motor vehicle that has no more than three wheels in contact with the ground. The examiner will not conduct the test if the vehicle has more than three wheels in contact with the ground.

If I fail my test, how long do I have to wait to reschedule another test?

You must wait at least until the next day to schedule another test. You cannot schedule another road test on the same day you failed a road test.

How many road tests can I take, and do I have to pay any additional fees?

You can take as many road tests as you wish while your permit remains valid as long as you have paid the necessary fees. Your automobile permit fee includes the fee for two road tests. To take up to two more tests (non-CDL), you must pay a $10 fee before you will be able to schedule a third road test. You can pay the additional road test fee on-line, by telephone at 1-518-402-2100, or at a local DMV office.

For each CDL test, you must first pay a $40.00 fee on-line, by telephone at 1-518-402-2100, or at a local DMV office. If you pay the CDL test fee at a DMV office, you will receive a receipt. You must enter the receipt number when you schedule the CDL test appointment by telephone or on-line.
