NYS DMV - Vehicle Registration - Fees and Use Taxes for Passenger Vehicles

IMPORTANT: The fees displayed on this page refer to the fees in effect for renewals where the expiration date is before September 1, 2009 and for original transactions processed before September 1, 2009. For renewals where the expiration date is on or after September 1, 2009 and for original transactions on or after September 1, 2009, use the New Fee Chart.
Use the chart to determine your registration fee. Find the weight of your vehicle. The dollar amount listed to the right of the vehicle weight is the registration fee for two years.
If this is the original registration of your vehicle, you must pay the fees for your vehicle plates ($15.00), your title certificate ($50.00), and the sales tax. The amount of the sales tax depends on the purchase price and your locality. You can see the current sales tax rates by jurisdiction at the Department of Taxation and Finance web site.
Determine if you are required to pay a vehicle use tax in your county.
There is a minimum 2-year fee of $26 for a vehicle that has 6 or more cylinders, or for an electric vehicle. (Dealers: This minimum fee is not a surcharge or an additional fee. Do not add $26 to the fee that the chart indicates or to the amount that the Dealer's Registration Fee Calculator calculates.)

Vehicle Use Taxes for Passenger Vehicles

Residents of New York City and several counties in NYS must pay a vehicle use tax when they register a passenger vehicle or renew a passenger vehicle registration. The DMV collects the taxes for the city and the counties. Read the table below to determine if you must pay a vehicle use tax. If you have questions about these taxes, ask the city or county where you reside or have a business.

If you do not reside in New York City and you are exempt from the vehicle use tax in the county where you reside or have a business, complete form UT-11C. If you reside in New York City and you are exempt from the NYC vehicle use tax, get form UT-11 from a local DMV office or a DMV Call Center.

New York City — All Counties
