DEPARTMENT TO ISSUE REFUNDS TO NON-DRIVER ID CUSTOMERS
Non-Driver Identification Card Fee Returned to Previous Price

Acting Commissioner Nancy A. Naples of the State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) today announced a five-dollar refund to approximately 130,000 DMV customers who were charged ten dollars for non-driver identification cards.  The fee for the documents will also be returned to the previous price of five dollars.

"Upon discovery of the discrepancy, the Department immediately took steps to provide refunds to customers and amend the fee schedule by returning it to the previous price," Acting Commissioner Nancy A. Naples said.  "We are working diligently with the Office of the State Comptroller to ensure that the refunds are distributed as quickly as possible."

Beginning on October 1, 2005 the photo document fee was increased from $5.00 to $10.00 as agreed to by the Legislature in the 2005-06 Enacted State Budget.  However, the new law that raised the fee did not specifically increase the cost for non-driver identification cards.

The Department's records indicate that some customers paid a $10.00 document fee for a non-driver identification card instead of the $5.00 price.  Once the Department identified the situation, the agency immediately began to take steps to institute refunds to all customers charged the higher fee and to amend the process back to the previous fee schedule utilized before the October change.

Customers impacted by the overpayment do not need to apply for a refund.  Checks will be automatically sent those customers that are due a refund.
