  • Form MV-619 or form MV-619R (Eye Test Report) that is completed by an eye-care professional. If the form MV-619 or form MV-619R has a print date of 9/03 or earlier, the form is valid for 6 months after the date of the eye test.  If the form has a print date of 3/04 or later, the eye-care professional marks a box on the form to indicate if the form is valid for 6 months or for 12 months after the date of the eye test.  You must enter information from the form to complete your on-line driver license renewal.

How long will it take to receive my new license?
Can I have my license sent via an express mail service?

Please allow at least four weeks to receive your new license document by mail. We're sorry, but express mail delivery service is not available.

My address has changed.  Can I still renew on-line?
I am temporarily living away from home.   Can I renew on-line?

No, do not renew your license on-line if you have changed your address without notifying DMV. You CANNOT request that your license be mailed to an address different from the address on file with DMV.

If you change your address during a vehicle or driver license transaction, the change will not affect the address on your other DMV records. For example, if you changed your address when you renewed a vehicle registration, this did not change the address on your driver license record or on the registration records for other vehicles.

The DMV changes the address on both your driver license and your vehicle records only if you report the change on form MV-232 (Change of Address) or through the DMV Call Center. You must provide all of your vehicle plate numbers to change your address on all of the vehicle records.

Note: If you file a request with the US Postal Service (USPS) to forward mail there is no guarantee that the USPS will forward all DMV documents to the new address.

During the on-line transaction, you will be prompted to enter your current zip code. If it doesn't match the zip code on file at DMV, you will not be able to complete your order.

To find out about other ways to renew your license, see Photo Document Renewal.

For general information about changing your address with DMV, see Change Your Address or Name.

What are the medical/vision questions and other certifications I will be required to complete?
Can you tell me more about my Organ Donor and Voter Registration options?

To complete your on-line renewal, you will have to answer several medical and vision questions, make one or more certifications, and decide about your organ donor and voter registration options, as follows:

Medical and Vision Questions.
  • Medical Conditions - You must answer several questions about whether you have, or have been treated for, certain medical conditions, such as the following:  hearing impairment; heart ailment; lost use of a limb or eye; convulsive disorder or any condition which causes unconsciousness. Substantial changes in your health may disqualify you from renewing on-line.

  • Vision Exam - An eye-care professional must complete form MV-619 (Eye Test Report) for you.  If the form MV-619 has a print date of 9/03 or earlier, the form is valid for 6 months after the date of the eye test.  If the form has a print date of 3/04 or later, the eye-care professional marks a box on the form to indicate if the form is valid for 6 months or for 12 months after the date of the eye test. You must enter information from the form to complete your on-line driver license renewal.
CDL and Driver Certifications.
  • CDL Certification - If you have a CDL class license, you will be required certify whether or not you comply with federal requirements for commercial drivers.

  • Driver Certification - You must read and agree to a Driver Certification statement. To indicate your agreement, check the box next to the sentence "I agree to the above certification." The text of the Driver Certification follows:
The information I have given is true to the best of my knowledge.

Important: False statements are punishable under Section 210.45 of the Penal Law. If I am a male citizen at least 18 but less than 26 years of age, I consent to be registered with the Selective Service System (SSS), if so required by federal law. I authorize the Commissioner to forward to the SSS my personal information that is required for registration.
Organ Donor and Voter Registration Options.
  • Organ Donor - Organ Donor - Read form MV-OD (What You Should Know about Becoming an Organ and Tissue Donor), and read the important notes about organ and tissue donations displayed in the transaction.

  • Voter Registration - You may choose to register to vote or change your voter information using a fill-in form that you can complete on-line and then print and mail to your county Board of Elections. If you select this option, a special "Voter Registration Form" button will be added to your on-screen order confirmation. Press the button to open the form, and follow the instructions.

My license has already expired (or is expiring very soon).  Can I renew on-line?

If your license is due to expire within the next year or has expired within the last two years, you may renew your license on-line. The expiration date of your new license and the renewal fees are not adjusted because you renew after your driver license expires.

If your license expired more than two years ago, you are not eligible to renew. Instead, see New Drivers - How to Apply for instructions.

IMPORTANT! - You may be ticketed if you drive with an expired driver license.  If your license has expired or is due to expire very soon, and you need to operate a motor vehicle, we recommend that you visit a local DMV Office to renew so that you will have an interim document (temporary license).  You can get a temporary license only at a DMV office.

My license is due to be renewed on my 21st birthday.   When is the best time to renew?

The majority of licenses issued to people under age 21 expire on their 21st birthday. If your license expires on your 21st birthday, you will automatically receive a renewal invitation in the mail between 45 and 60 days before your birthday. By renewing 39 days or less before your 21st birthday, you will be issued a new license without the "UNDER 21" legend. It should arrive in the mail close to your birthday. If you renew 40 days or more before your 21st birthday, your new license will still say "UNDER 21".

If your license DOES NOT expire on your 21st birthday, and you have already paid for your "over 21" license with your original permit and license package, then you will automatically be sent a new driver's license without the "UNDER 21" legend around the date of your birthday. If you do not receive your new license by two (2) weeks after your birthday, please contact the DMV Call Center for assistance.

I have changed my name.  Can I renew on-line?

No. You must go to a DMV office to change your name on your license.  See Name or Address Change for instructions.

What additional certifications are required to renew a commercial driver license (CDL)?

How much will it cost to renew my license on-line?

The fee depends on your license class. However, the fee for renewing on-line is the same as for other methods of renewing a license. There is no additional charge for using our on-line service.

For more information about renewing your license, including how to determine your renewal fee, see Photo Document Renewal.

How do I pay for my on-line renewal?

You may pay for your renewal fee using one of the following credit cards: American Express Discover Card/Novus MasterCard VISA

  • American Express®
  • Discover Card®/Novus®
  • MasterCard®
  • VISA®

DMV will also accept debit cards (check cards) issued by Visa® and MasterCard® only if they do not require you to enter a PIN, or Personal Identification Number.

Is it safe to use my credit card on the Internet?

DMV uses SSL (secure socket layering), which is the industry standard for Internet commerce. It encrypts your credit card and personal information to ensure security of credit card transactions. Your credit card information will ALWAYS be encrypted during a DMV Internet Office Transaction. For more information, see DMV Privacy and Security Statement.

What is my order number for, and where can I find it?
How will I know if my transaction worked?

After you submit your transaction, you should see a confirmation page that displays an order number, the fee you were charged, and other important information about your transaction.

Be sure to write down your order number in case you need to contact us about your transaction. We will also attempt to send you an e-mail confirmation using the address that you entered on the payment screen. The e-mail confirmation will also include your order number.

If we are unable to process your transaction, you will see an error message explaining the problem. Most error messages also include suggestions for helping you to resolve the error. You will not be charged for a transaction that does not process.

Please Note...
Any confirmation that you receive on-screen or by e-mail is not a receipt and is not legal proof of a valid license. Your only receipt is the photo document that DMV will mail to you.

Can I cancel my order?

No, this transaction cannot be canceled.
