 Renew your NYS driver license.
  • For driver licenses only.  Learner's permits and non-driver ID cards are not eligible.
  • A Form MV-619 or form MV-619R (Eye Test Report) is required.
  • Please allow two weeks for your new license to arrive by mail.

PLEASE NOTE! - If your license has expired or is about to expire, and you need to operate a motor vehicle, we recommend that you visit a local DMV Office to renew so that you will have an interim document (temporary license). You may be ticketed if you drive without having a valid license.

Requirements:

To use this transaction...

  • You must have your browser set to enable cookies.
  • You must have a valid NYS driver license that is eligible to be renewed:
    • A driver license may be renewed up to one year before its expiration date.
    • An expired license may be renewed if it has been expired for less than two years. However, you may be ticketed if you drive with an expired license.
    • Your new license expiration date and your renewal fee will be the same whether you renew early or late.
  • You must provide the following information about you and your DMV record:
    • The Client ID Number and Document Number from your current license (see sample document).
    • Your date of birth, the last four digits of your Social Security Number, and your current zip code.
    • An eye-care professional must complete form MV-619 or form MV-619R (Eye Test Report) for you.  If the form MV-619 or form MV-619R has a print date of 9/03 or earlier, the form is valid for 6 months after the date of the eye test.  If the form has a print date of 3/04 or later, the eye-care professional marks a box on the form to indicate if the form is valid for 6 months or for 12 months after the date of the eye test.  You will be required to enter information from this form.
    • The address on our files must be your current address. Your new license can be sent only to the address on DMV's file. No address change is allowed. E-mail requests for address changes are NOT accepted.
    • You must provide a valid e-mail address for us to send you a confirmation. A protected or blocked e-mail address, including spam blocking software, may prevent you from receiving your confirmation e-mail. Your e-mail program must be able to receive e-mail from addresses that include the domain: dmv.state.ny.us.
    • You must use one of the credit cards accepted by DMV to pay the fee.
    • You must provide additional information and certifications to renew a commercial driver license (CDL).
Limitations:

You CANNOT use this transaction if...

  • Your driving privileges are suspended or revoked.
  • You are residing in a country other than the United States - including military addresses.
  • You want to remove an existing corrective lens or hearing aid restriction from your license.
  • Your form MV-619 or form MV-619R (Eye Test Report) was completed by an eye-care professional from outside the United States.
  • You are required to wear telescopic lenses.


The following documents are NOT eligible for on-line renewal:

  • Non-driver identification cards.
  • Learner permits.
  • Conditional or restricted licenses.
  • Licenses which require an ignition interlock.
  • Licenses which are "valid without photo".
