How do I order a duplicate license/permit on-line?

There are four steps (pages) in an on-line duplicate license/permit order, as shown below.  Follow the instructions on each page.

Before starting your order, you should verify that you meet the basic eligibility requirements.  Review the checklist to make sure that you have all of the items you will need to complete the transaction.  Read these important cautions.

  1. Enter your driver information.

You will be asked for the following information: the type of document to be replaced (license or permit), your Client ID number or your name, plus your date of birth, gender/sex, the last four digits of your Social Security Number, and your current ZIP code.  DMV privacy and security statement.

  2. Verify your DMV record.

Review the information returned from our files to be sure that we have correctly identified you.  Also note the document replacement fee.  To continue your order, you must read and agree to the Certification statement.

  3. Pay the document replacement fee.

Enter your credit card information and an e-mail address where we can send you a confirmation of your transaction.  Then submit the order.

In addition, you will be required to enter the following information:

*A learner permit holder under age 18 must provide a Client Identification Number (CID). If you do not have your CID, you must use another method to apply for your duplicate document. You cannot apply on-line without your CID.

Our agency Privacy and Security statement describes the DMV's privacy policy regarding information collected from users of this website. Additionally, your personal information is protected under the federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA).

How long will it take to get my duplicate license or permit?
Can I have it sent by an express mail service?

Please allow four weeks to receive your duplicate by mail.  We're sorry, but express mail delivery service is not available.  If you need a temporary license/permit, please visit a DMV office to order your duplicate.

IMPORTANT! - If you need to operate a motor vehicle, we recommend that you visit a DMV Office to place your order so that you can be issued a temporary license/permit. You can get a temporary license/permit only at a DMV office.  You may be ticketed if you drive without having a valid driver license or learner's permit in your possession.

My address has changed. Can I still order on-line?
I am temporarily living away from home. Can I order on-line?

No.  Do not request a duplicate license or permit on-line if you have changed your address without notifying DMV.  You CANNOT request that your duplicate license be mailed to an address different than the address on file with DMV.  You CANNOT e-mail DMV and request an address change.

If you change your address during a vehicle or driver license transaction, the change will not affect the address on your other DMV records. For example, if you changed your address when you renewed a vehicle registration, this did not change the address on your driver license record or on the registration records for other vehicles.

The DMV changes the address on both your driver license and your vehicle records only if you report the change on form MV-232 (Change of Address) or through the DMV Call Center. You must provide all of your vehicle plate numbers to change your address on all of the vehicle records.

Note: If you file a request with the US Postal Service (USPS) to forward mail there is no guarantee that the USPS will forward all DMV documents to the new address.

During the on-line duplicate transaction, you will be prompted to enter your current ZIP code. If it doesn't match the ZIP code on file at DMV, you will not be able to complete your order.

To find out how to get a new license or permit with your correct address on it, or to have it mailed to a temporary address, see How to Replace Your License, Permit or Non-driver ID Card by Mail.

For general information about changing your address with DMV, see Change Your Address or Name.

What is the Certification Statement?

To complete your transaction, you will need to read and agree to the Certification in Step 2. To indicate your agreement, check the box next to the sentence "I agree to the above Certification." You may not complete your order without checking the agreement box.

The text of the Certification Statement reads as follows:

I understand that by agreeing to this certification I am indicating that the information I have given on this application is true to the best of my knowledge. If I am applying for a replacement license or permit, I certify that I am the holder of a valid New York State driver license or permit that is not now suspended or revoked, and that this license or permit has been lost, mutilated or destroyed. If the lost license or permit is found after I receive the replacement license or permit, I will turn in the original to the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles.

IMPORTANT:  Making a false statement in any license application, or in any proof or statement in connection with it, or deceiving or substituting, or causing another to deceive or substitute in connection with such application, is a misdemeanor under Section 392 of the Vehicle and Traffic Law, and may result in the revocation or suspension of your license.

The improper use of a New York State Drivers License for any purpose by a person, other than the one to whom the license was issued, may result in administrative action or the arrest and prosecution of the subject in possession of the license. These actions may also result in the revocation or suspension of that subject's license or driving privileges.

Sections of the Penal Law which may apply to the unauthorized filing to obtain or to the use of these duplicates:

Sec. 190.23 False Personation
Sec. 190.25 Criminal Impersonation in the second degree
Sec. 210.35 Making an apparently sworn false statement in the second degree
Sec. 115.00 Criminal facilitation in the fourth degree
Sec. 105.00 Conspiracy in the sixth degree
Sec. 175.35 Offering a false instrument for filing in the second degree
Sec. 175.30 Offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree

Can I cancel this transaction if I find my document?

No.  This transaction cannot be canceled.  When your new license arrives, use it.  Destroy the original.

I lost a license and a permit. Can I replace both of them on-line?

Yes. For example, if you have both a driver license and a motorcycle learner's permit, you may order replacements for both of them on-line. You will need to do two separate transactions, one for the license and one for the permit.

My license or permit was stolen or lost due to a crime, may I get a duplicate on-line?

If your license or permit was stolen or lost due to a crime, you may order a duplicate on-line, however you must pay the $15 replacement fee. Items lost due to a crime may be replaced free of charge, but that must be done at a DMV office. See If Your License, Permit or ID is Lost or Stolen for information on replacing your license or permit if it was lost due to a crime.

Can I order a duplicate conviction stub on-line?

As of January 29, 2002, a new law eliminated the requirement for a record of convictions stub. DMV no longer issues conviction stubs.

My license or permit has already expired (or is expiring very soon). Can I get a duplicate on-line?

If your license or permit has already expired, you cannot order a duplicate on-line. You must renew. See Renew License, ID or Permit for instructions.

If your license or permit is due to expire within one year, you have the option of renewing your license or permit instead of ordering a duplicate.

IMPORTANT! - Getting a duplicate does NOT exempt you from having to renew your license or permit before it expires. You may be ticketed if you drive with an expired driver license or learner's permit.

I am under 21. Can I order a duplicate license or permit on-line?

If your 21st birthday is within the next 40 days, you MAY NOT order a duplicate on-line.

If you are under 21, and it is more than 40 days before your 21st birthday, you may order a duplicate on-line. However, your duplicate will be issued with an "UNDER 21" logo, just like the original.

NOTE: The majority of licenses issued to people under age 21 expire on their 21st birthday. If your license expires on your 21st birthday, you will automatically receive a renewal invitation in the mail between 45 and 60 days before your birthday. By renewing 40 days or less before your 21st birthday, you will be issued a new license without the "UNDER 21" logo. It should arrive in the mail close to your birthday. If you renew 41 days or more before your 21st birthday, your new license will still say "UNDER 21".

If your license DOES NOT expire on your 21st birthday, and you have already paid for your "over 21" license with your original permit and license package, then you will automatically be sent a new driver's license without the "UNDER 21" logo around the date of your birthday. If you do not receive your new license by two (2) weeks after your birthday, please contact the DMV Call Center for assistance.

IMPORTANT! - If you need to operate a motor vehicle, we recommend that you visit a DMV Office to place your order so that you can be issued a temporary license/permit. You can get a temporary license/permit only at a DMV office.  You may be ticketed if you drive without having a valid driver license or learner's permit in your possession.

I have changed my name since my driver document was issued. Can I order a duplicate license on-line?

No. You must go to a DMV office to change your name on your license or permit. See Name or Address Change for instructions.

How much does it cost to order a duplicate license or permit on-line?

The document replacement fee is $15. This is the same as for other methods of ordering a duplicate. There is no additional charge for using our on-line service.

How do I pay for my duplicate license or permit on-line?

You must pay for your duplicate license using one of the following credit cards:  American Express  Discover Card/Novus  MasterCard  VISA

  • American Express®
  • Discover Card®/Novus®
  • MasterCard®
  • VISA®

DMV will also accept debit cards (check cards) issued by Visa® and MasterCard® if they do not require you to enter a PIN, or Personal Identification Number.

Is it safe to use my credit card on the Internet?

DMV uses SSL (secure socket layering), which is the industry standard for Internet commerce. It encrypts your credit card and personal information to ensure security of credit card transactions. Your credit card information will ALWAYS be encrypted during a DMV Internet Office Transaction. For more information, see DMV Privacy and Security Statement.

Will I get a receipt?
Why do I need an order number?
How will I know if my transaction worked?

After you submit your transaction, you should see a confirmation page that displays an order number, the fee you were charged, and other important information about your transaction.

Be sure to write down your order number in case you need to contact us about your transaction. We will also attempt to send you an e-mail confirmation using the address that you entered on the payment screen. The e-mail confirmation will also include your order number.

If we are unable to process your transaction, you will see an error message explaining the problem. Most error messages also include suggestions for helping you to resolve the error. You will not be charged until your order is processed.

Please Note...
Any confirmation that you receive on-screen or by e-mail is not a receipt and is not legal proof of a valid license or permit. Your only receipt is the duplicate photo identification document that DMV will mail to you.

What are the hours to order a duplicate license or permit on-line?

On-line duplicate license and permit ordering is normally available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Most orders are processed when you submit your transaction. However, some orders may be accepted and held for processing on our next business day. When this happens, your order confirmation will say "accepted." Once your duplicate license or permit order has been fully processed, you will be sent a follow up notification by e-mail.
