How to install Adobe Acrobat Reader®:

Adobe Acrobat Reader® is a software program that allows you to open and print documents that are in portable document format (PDF). All forms on the DMV web site are PDF documents. After you install Adobe Acrobat Reader® on your computer, you can use any type of computer or printer to open and print PDF documents. Adobe Acrobat Reader® is free at the Adobe web site.

If you cannot open a form, or a part of the form is blank, or the characters on the page are not normal:

Make sure that you installed Adobe Acrobat Reader®.

Check the memory (RAM) on your computer. This is the most common problem. When you open a PDF document, you use a large amount of the memory on your computer. The problem can occur even if your computer has a large amount of memory. To prevent this problem, save the form on your computer.

How to save the form on your computer:

  1. Put your cursor on the form number (the link) on the DMV Forms page.
  2. Click the button on the right-hand side of your mouse to open the pop-up menu.
  3. Use the button on the left-hand side of your mouse to select "Save..." on the pop-up menu.
  4. Find a location on your computer to save the form, then click the button to "Save".
  5. Close your browser. You can open a PDF document that you saved when you are not connected to the Internet.
  6. Locate the form on your computer, and open the form.

Close all other software programs before you try to open the form. If the form does not open correctly, close Adobe Acrobat Reader®, and then close all other software programs on your computer. Try to open the form again. If the form does not open correctly, start your computer again and try to open the form.

Check which version of Adobe Acrobat Reader® you have on your computer. A new version of Adobe Acrobat Reader® can resolve many common problems. The newest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader® is free at the Adobe web site.

Check the settings on your browser. Make sure that your browser allows you to use Adobe Acrobat Reader®.

Netscape: Use this sequence of menu commands: "OPTIONS | General Preferences | Helpers". Make sure that the setting indicates that Adobe Acrobat Reader® is the program used to open PDF documents.

Internet Explorer: Use this sequence of menu commands: "VIEW (Or under TOOLS)| Options | Programs | Viewers | File Types". Make sure that the setting indicates that Adobe Acrobat Reader® is the program used to open PDF documents.

AOL and CompuServe users: Check the Preferences and your Internet settings. Make sure that the setting indicates that Adobe Acrobat Reader® is the program used to open PDF documents.

If you can open the forms, but the forms do not print correctly:

Use the button or menu command in the Adobe Acrobat Reader® window. Do not use the button or menu command on your browser menu. If parts of the form are blank or you see characters on the page that are not normal, read the instructions listed above.

Contact the manufacturer of your printer and install the newest printer driver for your printer.
